This Week's Speaker: Debbie Mitcham

Ms. Mitcham is the Vice President of Finance and CFO of Northside Hospital. She has worked for the hospital for 25 years. During her tenure at Northside, she has served as the Director of Decision Support, Director of Finance and System Controller and since 2004 she has served as the Vice President of Finance and CFO of the Northside Hospital System.

Prior to working with Northside, Ms. Mitcham worked with the Georgia Baptist Medical Center and HBO and Company. Ms. Mitcham graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a BS in Health Systems. Ms. Mitcham also has an MBA Degree in Finance from Georgia State University.

Ms. Mitcham serves on the Board of the Ovarian Cancer Institute.

In her spare time, Ms. Mitcham enjoys playing polo, running and reading. Ms. Mitcham has a daughter currently attending college.

PCMS Quizbowl narrowly beaten by RCD Team

In an exciting match to determine bragging rights for being the Best and Brightest for 2017, the RCD team eked out a narrow victory over the awesome QuizBowl team from PCMS. After a rocky start where PCMS jumped off to a 4-0 lead, the resolute and determined RCD team fought back to a slim 20-19 lead going into the final tossup question which had 3 bonus questions. When the dust settled RCD had prevailed for only the second time in 8 matches with PCMS.

In late breaking news: On Saturday (01/21/17), The PCMS Quizbowl team competed in the State Finals. The PCMS QuizBowl team had never advanced to the State Finals in the past. Although they weren't able to win all their matches, they did win two of five matches and were only narrowly defeated in the other three matches. This is very encouraging because the team next year will have many returning members.

Our Club has supported the PCMS program for the past 8 years. This year Rotarians Tom Lashway and Rick Otness participated in most of the practice sessions. If you would like to participate as a mentor of the QuizBowl team, please contact either Tom or Rick for more information. As the saying goes " the more the merrier". Perhaps with just a little more support from our fellow Rotarians, they will be able to win the State Tournament in 2017-2018.

2017 State of the City: March 9, 2017

The 2017 State of the City for Dunwoody has been set for Thursday, March 9th, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

As in the previous State of the City, The Dunwoody Rotary Club has volunteered to assist the City of Dunwoody in running the event. For our help, the Dunwoody Rotary Club will be able to keep 100% of funds above the costs to run the event.

We need your help in the following ways:

1. Setting up the event and checking people in the day of the event Thursday, March 9th. This is the area we need the most help, and we'll start about four hours before the event.

2. Assisting with getting sponsors to donate or provide gifts to put in the 250 gift bags.

3. Assisting the City of Dunwoody with filling the gift bags either the night before the event (Wednesday, March 8th), or the day of the event (Thursday, March 9th).

Dunwoody Rotarian Tom Lashway has volunteered to be the Chair for Rotary this year, but needs your help in making this event go smoothly.

JA /Rotary Partnership: Welcome to the Real World!

Thank You Dunwoody Rotarian Volunteers…

On January 9 and 10^th Dunwoody Rotarians discovered ways to become as smart as a 6^th grader! Rotary volunteers - Rick Otness, Tom Lashway, Bob O’Brien, Ron Barden, George Stewart, Lorri Christopher, Jim Riticher, John Mills, Cathie Brumfield, John Mills, Kathy Brandt – participated in JA BizTown and JA Finance Park.

The purpose of the day was to create an experiential learning opportunity for 6^th grade students who were introduced, in their classrooms beforehand, to some basics of financial literacy. The role of Rotarians and other volunteers was to introduce an element of reality, based on their own career and life experiences. The result was an energy filled learning experience for one and all. Thank you, Dunwoody Rotarians for dedicating your time, knowledge and energy to these inquisitive middle school students. Thanks to the help from Dunwoody Rotary and other volunteers, more than 500 Peachtree Charter Middle School students experienced a glimpse of “the real world” in JA BizTown. You are THE BEST!

A couple of highlights…

Rotarian Councilman Jim Riticher, assigned appropriately as coach to the City Hall team, heard from two staff members, the CEO and CFO, “I do not have enough time to do my job”! Unsurprised by this exclamation by his hardworking team confronted with a time crunch, Jim replied with a knowing smile, “Welcome, my friends, to the real world of a lean team at city hall!” Lesson learned.

During a brief lunch break, 6^th grade Social Studies teacher Mr. Yoemans, thanked the Rotarian volunteers at his table for taking the time to bring a dose of reality to his students. “I love JA BizTown,” said Mr. Yoemans. He explained that the intensity of the JA BizTown experience makes a huge impression on his students. Throughout the rest of the year he is able to refer back to the BizTown experience when teaching lessons about the basics of economics. They are so excited and energized by the BizTown experience that he when he refers to future lessons on the economy as, “We are going to study about BizTown”, the students are positive and ready to learn. It is not just about a day of learning and fun…it offers an experience rich with learning potential for many future lessons.

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunity – 2/2 and 2/3 – JA Discovery Center

More than 500 7^th graders from Peachtree Charter Middle School will participate in JA Finance Park during the first week of February. Please consider joining 7 Dunwoody Rotarians – District Governor Nominee Court Dowis, Michelle Annett, Anne Glenn, Jackie Cuthbert, Kathy Brandt, Brian Harper, Dabney Daniel - who plan to help out on those days. ​2017 Governors Ball

On Friday (December 2, 2016) Floyd Williams officially kicked off the Club's run up to the 2017 Governors Ball. For those of you that missed the meeting here are a few of the essential details.

When: Saturday March 4, 2017 from 6 PM to 11:15 PM

Where: Westin Hotel

Theme: Moonshine and Magnolias

Dress: Black tie optional

What can you do?

1. Get stores/organizations to donate high quality Gifts that can be auctioned off to raise money for the Dunwoody Rotary Charitable Fund,

2. Invite your friends that are:

a. willing to donate money to the Dunwoody Rotary Charitable Fund

b. but who also like to party

3. Plan on attending with your spouse (You have already purchased 2 tickets with your Club dues)

4. If you own a small to medium sized business, consider purchasing a sponsorship

a. Can invite 4 of your best customers with their spouses, treat them to a great party, and make a substantial contribution to the Dunwoody Rotary Charitable Foundation, all of which should be a tax deductable business expense related to entertaining your key customers. 5. We are asking each Club member to volunteer at least 4 hours of their time as we prepare for the Ball. Toward that end, on Sunday (12/04/2016) at ~8:15 PM, you were each sent an email with a link that will take you to the Club Runner website where you can sign up for one of the following Tasks:

Please sign up as soon as possible, so that the various Chairs can reach out and get you involved in our preparations. We need to mobilize the entire Club this year, as we are expanding the capacity of the Governors Ball from 250 to 400 attendees.

What does that mean? We need to invite more guests.

Also, as promised at the meeting, you were sent an email outlining the steps to print the 2017 Governors Ball Gift Donation form. Those instructions are:
