We hope you all plan to attend tomorrow's special Thirsty Thursday (May 26) event - a "Prospective Member" social at the Spruill Art Gallery, 4681 Ashford-Dunwoody Road beginning at 5:30 pm. There are so many reasons to attend for YOU to attend:

  • You can help welcome our visitors and share your Rotary story
  • You can see the art exhibit that RCD is sponsoring at the Gallery
  • You can visit with your Family of Rotary while enjoying cocktails and food from Charlie Augello's East 48th Street Market

Plan to join us!

This Week's Speaker
James Ottley, "Atlanta History for Cocktail Parties"

Join us this Friday to welcome James Ottley - in person at Le Meridien Atlanta Perimeter, 111 Perimeter Center West, Atlanta GA 30346, or via Zoom at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86202979419

James is a commercial lending attorney with Stout Kaiser, LLC. A fourth generation Atlantan, James lives with his son William in Smyrna, just outside of Atlanta. James is a graduate of The Westminster Schools in Atlanta.  He received his B.A. in English from Duke University and a J.D., with honors, from the University of Georgia School of Law. He published two books on Atlanta history, entitled “Atlanta History for Cocktail Parties,” and “Atlanta History for Cocktail Parties II – Another Round”.  When not digging up Atlanta history, Mr. Ottley enjoys travelling around the state of Georgia and spending time in the great outdoors with his 15-year old son, Will.

Watch Where You're Parking!

When you arrive at this Friday's meeting (or any Friday's meeting), please refrain from parking in the Wells Fargo Bank parking lot. The lot is marked for "Wells Fargo Customers Only" and you could be towed. You can park in LeMeridien's lot on Friday morning at no charge to you! When you go to leave push the call button to raise the gate.

You Are Invited to the 23rd Annual "Roswell Remembers" Memorial Day Event

Editor's Note: In the early 1990s, a group of Vietnam Veterans - with the cooperation of the City of Roswell - raised money to construct a Memorial. Several of those veterans were Rotarians, including my husband Scott Cuthbert. We moved to Roswell as the "Faces of War" Memorial was under construction, and Scott volunteered to take the lead on the dedication ceremony that took place May 29, 1995 - featuring bag pipes, the Atlanta Wind orchestra, two fly-overs  and more.

In 1998, the Roswell Rotary Club and the City of Roswell established the “Roswell “Remembers” Memorial Day Ceremony was established in 1998 after the completion of the “Faces of War” Memorial. The desire was to create an annual non-political, non-commercial ceremony incorporating the Holiday, Families, and Community into one “great day of remembrance” honoring those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today.

This coming Monday, May 30, the 23rd annual event will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 30th at Roswell City Hall, 38 Hill Street. This is the largest Memorial Day Ceremony of its kind in the Southeast and attracts visitors throughout Georgia and the Southeast. I will be there and I hope to see some of you there too! It takes on the grounds of the Roswell City Hall. Read on for details. [more]

Rotary Youth Exchange
Get Ready to Welcome Camille in August!!

We are excited to announce that our Rotary Youth Exchange student for the 2022-23 school (and Rotary) year has been assigned!  Camille from Belgium is a 16-year-old who will be attending Dunwoody High School.  Her first language is French, and she has been studying English for five years.  Camille will arrive in August and will be with host families and our club until May 2023.  Dottie Toney will be Camille's counselor (liaison between Camille, the school, and our club).

We encourage everyone to meet Camille and invite her to fun Atlanta events (think: Atlanta United games, festivals, etc.).  If you will be driving or spending time with Camille you must be a certified volunteer for Rotary Youth Exchange.  The certification process involves a background check and two short training modules from the Department of State.  Please contact Deb Cameron (dsc630@gmail.com) with any questions or to start the certification process.

We also are still recruiting for a second host family for Camille - from about mid-November to early February.  The only requirement for the family is that they must live in the Dunwoody High School attendance area.  The family also will be required to obtain background checks and training.

If you know of a high school student, ages 14-18, who would be interested in going on Rotary Youth Exchange for the 2023-24 school year, please direct them to Deb or to ryeflorida.com for more information.
