Update: The Rotary Grove at Brook Run Park - Tree Planting

Brook Run Park was the place to be on Saturday,October 14, 2017: weekend recreaters, citizens picking up their new recycle carts, folks shopping at the Trees Atlanta tree sale, and volunteers adding 30 more trees to the Atlanta metro forest canopy.

President Rick Otness, PP Lang Wooddy, Ed Holladay, Hoshi, Daruwalla and Ranger Frederick Bounds met to pay the first installment on a four year project to honor Dunwoody veterans. The Treetarian Grit Award goes to Lang Wooddy coming out only seven weeks after back surgery.

We started the grove this year with three Shumard Oaks and two Crepe Myrtles. Five trees each year for four years. We were fortunate to have our little project coincide with a Trees Atlanta planting activity in Brook Run Park. They provided our trees and on site planting expertise that morning. Trees Altanta will make sure the trees are hydrated and properly pruned through the first year.

We started the grove this year with three Shumard Oaks and two Crepe Myrtles.

We will dedicate the new grove at our Family of Rotary picnic Sunday October 29.

If you and your children/grand children want to participate in Pumpkin Fest make sure to sign up at our next Rotary meeting, this Friday October 27 (at the Sheraton).

The Survey Results are In!

Big thanks to each of you (63) who completed the survey!

The results were fascinating and surprising on some fronts. I understand there were parts of it that were clunky and seemingly unrelated to Rotary. You will see how the moving parts interrelate, over time! We promised to be transparent and confidential with your answers.

Starting November 3rd, we will be engaging in a series of 10-minute sessions spread over 3-4 meetings. Each session will be dedicated to a big topical area the survey has shed some light on. Each talk will include a 5 minute presentation plus 5 minutes devoted to Q&A.

These starter conversations are not directives, or discussions of Board decisions made. No decisions have been made as yet. The Board of Directors has not yet seen the results, but will shortly. These weekly discussions are an overview of what you said you wanted out of the club, and what you like putting your hard earned human capital into.

More broadly the survey was about how each of us is connected to the fabric of the Dunwoody community. If you have topical ideas for these discussion sessions feel free to send them now to Jackie Cuthbert (cuthbert@mindspring.com) and Craig Gregozeski (craig.gregozeski@lpl.com) and we will take them under advisement. We already have a number of topics in the works, including Financials.

Thank you for completing the survey, and rest assured, the results are coming to you asap!

Family of Rotary Event - October 29, 2017

The Rotary Club of Dunwoody is proud to announce a family fun Family of Rotary event and the dedication of the Club’s latest Brook Run Park Service Project. On Sunday, October 29, 2017 at Brook Run Park the Club will hold a Tree Planting dedication, followed by a pumpkin decorating contest and a pizza party. This is surely going to be a fun day for the entire family and especially for the kids and grand kids. There is no charge for this event.

The fun will begin at 2:00 PM ET at Brook Run Park with the Club’s dedication of our new Rotary Grove. Under the direction of Ranger Fred Bounds, our club plans to plant five (5) trees a year, each year for four (4) years for a total of 20 trees. The grove is to be dedicated to those members of the armed forces from Dunwoody who served and sacrificed for our freedom.

We hope to see everyone at Brook run Park to participate in this new community venture and fun filled day. Please register on the club's calendar so that we know how much food and pumpkins to order.

New Payment Options for Paying Dues - Effective October 1, 2017

Effective with the October, 1, 2017 invoice, there will be two new payment options to make paying your dues easier.

In addition to mailing in a check, you may also pay via credit card or ACH right from the electronic invoice. There will be no additional charge for this service.

If anyone has any questions, please contact Cathie Brumfield at: (770) 350-1552.

Calling All Entrepreneurs!

Are you an Entrepreneur? Would you be willing to serve on a Panel Discussion regarding your Entrepreneurial experience(s)?

If so the Rotaract Club of Atlanta would like to host a panel discussion on Entrepreneurship to its members and guests at an upcoming meeting sometime, over the next several months. This would be our third panel discussion to the RCA on a topic of their choosing. These sessions are moderated, generally lasting 30-40 minutes with 3-4 RCD panelists.

If you're an entrepreneur and interested in sharing your insights with a highly energized group of young professionals (ages 22-30) please contact Warren Turner, RCD Rotaract Liaison, by phone 404-664-6000 or email wturner@cardinalpoints.com

Volunteers Needed: Dekalb County Special Olympics - November 3, 2017

Upcoming Event: Tour of Grady Memorial Hospital - Thursday, November 16, 2017

A few weeks ago our speaker was Frank Blake, Chairman of Grady Hospital Corporation. We learned many interesting things about Grady and the services they offer the greater Atlanta metropolitan area. They are nationally rated and provide outstanding services for burn victims, stroke patients, ER services and many other medical conditions.

Our tour date is Thursday, November, 16, 2017 at 11 AM ET.

Our plan is, hopefully, to have volunteer drives so we can carpool. Dependent upon the number of cars, the hospital will reserve spaces for us in the employee parking deck. It is always fun to ride together and share Rotary ideas and get to know each other better.

RSVP and registration is now closed. Please speak with Kathy Brandt if you have any questions.

Get Ready to Welcome the World in January 2018!

No we’re not having another Rotary International Convention here in 2018, but January 13, 15, 2018, we will host the 16th GRSP Leadership Weekend – bringing all 45 students from the class of 2017-18 to Atlanta. There is at least one opportunity for every Dunwoody Rotarian and your families to be involved as the students explore “Service Above Self” and their possibilities for making a difference in the world. The weekend starts Friday afternoon at the Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta and continues all day Saturday and Sunday morning at Oglethorpe University. Friday and Saturday evenings are for fellowship and fun.

We’ll share more details on the weekend’s agenda as we get closer. For now, we’re especially looking for host families who can welcome GRSP students to their home on Friday and Saturday night. It’s a great way to get to know a couple of students better – and from personal experience, it’s pretty easy. Host families provide beds to sleep in, breakfast Saturday and Sunday, a Saturday night meal, and transportation (home from Friday night’s event, and to and from Oglethorpe Saturday and Sunday morning). We already have previous host families signed up to help again – with room for about 20-25 of the students, so we’re looking for more volunteers.

If you’re interested, please contact Jackie Cuthbert at cuthbert@mindspring.com or 770-597-1183, and remember - even if you can’t host for the weekend, we’ll have other opportunities for you to spend time with the GRSP students. So watch for more information in November and December.

RCD Caring Hands

An oft-quoted maxim says, "No one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care". - Theodore Roosevelt

The cards for members and their families that circulate during our meetings are one way to express shared joy over good news or shared concern about difficulties experienced. As one of our members recently stated at his return from surgery, getting a card with heartfelt greetings from all the members present helped him feel better and heal sooner.

Once we know our friendly breakfast club is also a caring club, our dedication to "Service Above Self" is stronger and we look forward to participating in projects and events with other Rotarians. If we are in need of a service, the first call made will be to a Rotarian.

So, if you are aware of an approaching or pat event worthy of celebration or concern, please tell Dottie Toney-Ransom at toneydot@me.com. You can also write it on either a yellow card (for joy) or a blue card (for concern) and leave it on the table, or place it in Dottie's hand at the end of the meeting.

We ARE a very caring club! Thank you for helping to make it so.
