Topic: THE 2018 LEGISLATIVE AGENDA
This Week's Speaker: KAREN HANDEL

Karen Handel

Prior to her election to the U.S. House of Representative , Karen Handel held policy and communications positions with several major corporations and nonprofit organizations. She also served in the Bush-Quayle White House, as deputy chief of staff to Governor Sonny Perdue, and as the CEO of one of Georgia’s largest chambers of commerce.

As Chairman of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, Karen quickly distinguished herself as a problem-solver and smart negotiator -- plugging a $100 million budget deficit without raising taxes, delivering the County’s first truly balanced budget, and achieving significant ethics reforms.

One of just five women ever to be elected to statewide office in Georgia, Karen was Georgia’s 26th Secretary of State, and its first Republican Secretary of State. In this role, Karen successfully implemented various elections integrity reforms, including photo ID, and executed a much-needed, agency-wide modernization initiative, while cutting the department’s budget by nearly 20%.

In Congress, Karen serves on the House Judiciary Committee and on the Education and the Workforce Committee. For the past 25 years, Karen and her husband Steve have lived in the 6th District, which stretches from Marietta to Brookhaven, and from Milton to Sandy Springs.

2018 DISTRICT CONFERENCE

SANDESTIN GOLF AND BEACH RESORT MIRAMAR BEACH, FLORIDA - APRIL 26-29, 2018

With touches of technology, entertainment, innovation, and opportunities to sweat and serve, Rotacon2018 is a district conference designed to engage Rotarians, their guests, and families for a weekend full of inspirational stories, entertaining sessions, and educational breakouts. Enjoy time with your fellow club members and get to know 1,000 Rotarians and their guests from all over District 6900 in a relaxing and entertaining environment that is Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort.

If you've been to district conference before, you'll notice a few things different at Rotacon 2018. Opportunities to learn (in breakout session format) about compelling Rotary programs as well as engaging lifestyle learning sessions have been added. General sessions will be designed to take place within 90 minutes so that more time can be dedicated to enjoying time with fellow Rotarians, family, and friends. And perhaps the biggest difference will be that celebration of club achievements will take the form of an Oscars-style service award night in lieu of our traditional club achievement awards which are being moved out of the district conference program to a separate celebration later in the Rotary year.

If you've never been to a district conference, you'll find that Rotacon 2018 is designed with the average Rotarian and guest in mind.

Bring the family and enjoy an incredible, entertaining weekend in a beautiful setting!

25th Annual Rotary Club of Dunwoody Governor’s Ball

SAVE THE DATE: March 3, 2018, Westin Concourse.

There is a large percentage of members who donate items each year and We're quite sure that trend will continue. If you plan to donate or solicit a donation please indicate so as early as possible. This will allow us to get the Greater Giving database in order and will also allow us to create an Auction Catalog earlier in the process.

Now is the best time to bring gifts that you already have!

Looking for the fountain of youth? Try hanging out with younger people

Dunwoody Elementary School (DES) would like to establish a relationship between our older and younger generations who reside in the same community. DES is seeking RCD retirees, who area able, to come to the school once a week (30-minute commitment) and support instruction in the classroom. Individual volunteers will be matched with a teacher who will establish lines of communication with the volunteers.

Volunteers will be asked to help with math and reading fluency and possibly other activities that could benefit from an extra pair of eyes and hands. If you are interested in this opportunity please contact Warren Turner, RCD Youth Services Director (turner@cardinalpoints.com o 404-664-6000) for more details.

New Payment Options for Paying Dues

There are now two new payment options to make paying your dues easier, that became available with the October 1, 2017 invoices. These will continue to be available for the invoices coming out on or about January 1, 2018.

In addition to being able to mail in a check, you may now also pay by credit card or ACH, right from the electronic invoice. There is no additional charge for this using this method of paying.

If anyone has any questions, please contact Cathie Brumfield at: (770) 350-1552
