​Dunwoody Rotary welcomes/thanks servicemen

A dozen Rotarians (plus June Wise) were able to meet, greet, and thank our brave men and women serving in the armed services as they passed through Hartsfield Jackson airport this past Friday.

The home made cookies were a big hit with the troops, as were the chili dogs that were served up by the smiling Rotarians. The troops also appreciated the opportunity to leave their duffle bags and suit cases under the watchful eyes of the Rotarians, so they could roam the airport without having to haul their belongs with them. They were also treated to warm smiles by the Rotarians as the troops arrived at Hartsfield.

It was a pleasure to greet the arriving troops and have an opportunity to thank them for their service, as well as helping to make their brief stay at the Atlanta Airport more enjoyable. The USO facility had a steady stream of visitors, as there were several classes graduating at Fort Benning this past Friday. It was expected that ~300 service people would be passing through the USO facility on Friday.

Well done Rotary Club of Dunwoody!.

​ SUPER KIDS-SUPER SHARING

Sports equipment, book and school supply donation project

Our Interact Club at Dunwoody High School has teamed up with the National Football League, the Atlanta Super Bowl Host Committee, Verizon and Infinite Energy Center’s Forum for a Super Bowl community initiative that benefits local children in need. We are taking part in a Super Bowl donation project called Super Kids-Super Sharing.

They are collecting gently used (or new) books, sports equipment, school supplies and games. Donated items will be distributed to local schools and youth programs that serve children in need.

Please check your closets, toy boxes and garage for balls, gloves, cleats and other sports equipment you are no longer using, and take a moment to clear unwanted books and games off your shelves.

Beginning January 7th-14th, 2019 bring those items to school and place them in collection boxes located near the entrance of the school. All types of sports equipment and school supplies, books of all reading levels, video games and complete board games (with all their pieces) are needed. Items should be in new or good condition.

Looking for a Rotary Youth Exchange host Family

Rotary Club of Dunwoody is going to be hosting a Rotary Youth Exchange Student from Thailand , Mink , who just arrived!

We are excited to see her often and share with her this experience!

And we are still looking for host families who want to share this awesome experience for 90 days, (for late February through May).

Hosting a Rotary Youth Exchange Student can be incredibly rewarding for your family, bringing an international experience directly into your home. Host families provide room and board and share their lives with the Rotary Youth Exchange Students, involving them in family, community, and cultural activities. The Rotary Club of Dunwoody is looking for host families for our inbound student for next year, Mink from Thailand.

If you’re willing to experience one of the largest programs in Rotary by sharing your home and learning about a new culture, or you know a family that would be interested, contact Mike Parks, Deb Shelles Cameron, Dottie Toney-Ransom, Tania Lopez, or Jennie Stipick.

What are the responsibilities of a host family?
To accept the exchange student as a new member of your family. The student will be governed not only by the rules of the program but by the rules of your household. You are responsible for the safety of the exchange student the same as for your own children. Although you might become a bit more of the soccer mom or dad for normal everyday activities, it is not your responsibility to act as a taxi service or a tour guide. Rotarians for the hosting club will be helping in these areas.
