Todd Smith, an investigator with State Farm, spoke to Rotarians about the fraud that is committed on insurance companies. He spoke about the more common fraudulent cases he has investigated that we read about in the newspapers, but he also spoke about the cases that did not reach the headlines. He regaled Rotarians with stories of little old ladies that were convinced to inflate their claims in order to cover their deductible. He spoke about roofing contractors that convinced normal law-abiding people to file a wind damage claim on their roof in order to pay for a new roof. He advised Rotarians that insurance companies would in time not offer replacement cost insurance at all on roofs because of the excessive fraud cases they are seeing in this area alone.
