GRSP Student

Johan Appelros from Malmo, Sweden spoke to Rotary about his impressions and experiences with the Georgia Rotary Student Program over the past school year. He came to America with a slight degree of trepidation meeting the Rotarians that would be hosting him for a year. When he came through the doors of the Arrival Lobby at Hartsfield International Airport, he knew he was at home with the Rotarians that greeted him with a Swedish Flag and the GRSP sign. He left the airport with one of the host families and spent time with each host family before being moved into his dorm at the University of West Georgia. He went to the Conclave in August at Columbus, Georgia and met all 52 students, then made sure he went to every planned student weekend with Rotary the rest of the year. He joined the Climbing Team at UWG and made many friends and visited all over the Southeast with the team as a competitor. He will be traveling with friends for a couple of weeks, then coming back to Bremen to pack and get ready to go home. Over the summer, he will be working at his local golf course and in the Fall will start Lund University in Sweden, which is a very prestigious engineering school. At UWG he took math and physics related courses, as well as English Composition, Public Speaking and Philosophy, hoping that these courses would aid him later in life. He will be taking nothing but engineering courses at the Lund University. We will miss Johan, but know he will go far. He brought his companion GRSP student, Freja Vluff, from UWG with him to Rotary for a last visit, as she will not be coming back to Bremen. We wished both of them safe travels and encouragement for a wonderful life. In honor of Johan, the club awarded Dr. David Hicks a Will Watt Fellow in appreciation of his service as President of the Bremen Rotary Club in 2012-2013. Johan is pictured with Freja and host family, Lynn Clarke, and of course, Bremen Rotary President Dennis Cowart.
